| The Longsword is also known as the hand and a half sword because it could be used with one or two hands. Its popularity grew in European cultures during the mid to late middle ages as the use of shields diminished and plate armor became an ever more effective defense. The reach and power of the longer and heavier sword was much more effective against plate armor in battle. Sword-fighting Techniques changed and advanced greatly with the use of the Longsword with no shield.
This 48 inch version is somewhere near the median size of longswords. The medieval swordsmith's art of balancing strength and agility in a sword was at its height with the development of the Longsword. While this sword is long and hefty it has a surprising feel of strength and agility when in motion that is best described as powerful elegance. It is much more lively and easy to handle than it appears.
A 2/3 blade length fuller is standard with this sword. The fuller adds significantly to the appearance and the weight and balance is very minimally effected with an aluminum alloy blade.
The blade is crafted from 7075 aluminum alloy which has a very high strength to weight ratio. It also has a great ability to spring back to its straight profile when stressed. It is a great balance between strength and flexability like a well tempered steel. The guard and pommel are constructed of stainless steel to ensure rust free longevity and superb balance. |
