The Longsword is also known as the hand and a half sword because it could be used with one or two hands. Its popularity grew in European cultures during the mid to late middle ages as the use of shields diminished and plate armor became an ever more effective defense. The reach and power of the longer and heavier sword was much more effective against plate armor in battle. Sword-fighting Techniques changed and advanced greatly with the use of the Longsword with no shield.

The medieval swordsmith's art of balancing strength and agility in a sword was at its height with the development of the Longsword.
